Intern Concentration Area
Concentration Area
Interns will be given an option to choose a concentration area of choice for the year. Due to the time commitment in these areas, only one area may be chosen. This does not mean interns would not have opportunities to engage in diversity work. In addition, during the summer or less busy times, an intern who does not chose an assessment concentration may have the opportunity to provide a formal assessment.
A. Diversity
A concentrated training experience in diversity allows an intern to have an immersed experience working with a wide range of diversity factors both clinically and in outreach. The CAPS TD and primary supervisors will work as a team to make sure interns obtain a diverse case load and have opportunities to engage in experiences with diverse student groups over the course of the internship year. In addition, interns will sit on the Committee of Inclusive Excellence (CIE) to discuss ways CAPS can intentionally educate and support our staff on cultural humility, diversity awareness, and inclusivity. As members of the CIE, the intern in this concentration will facilitate one DEI meeting late in the spring semester and will write the Cultural Corner section of the CAPS monthly Newsletter. Additionally, with the support of the CAPS Outreach Coordinator and DEI Lead, interns may facilitate and develop outreach, group, and/or workshop programming to support underserved UNL student communities.
Assessment: A concentrated training experience in assessment allows an intern to have an immersed experience in providing formal psychological batteries with students who are wondering about their attentional difficulties and/or mental health diagnosis. Typically, this will include interns providing 1 to 2 formal psychological assessments each month. Given the time needed and the intensity of this work, the Assessment Coordinator and Training Director work collaboratively to ensure a good balance between providing clinical services and formal assessments. The two main assessment batteries provided within CAPS are ADHD Evaluations and Psychological/Diagnostic Evaluations. An ADHD Evaluation includes an intake, screeners, a cognitive assessment, and a personality assessment. Previous documentation and collaborative data from other resources are also gathered. For the Psychological/Diagnostic Evaluations, these evaluations include an intake, various screeners, and a personality assessment. Interns who choose this concentration will receive group supervision from a licensed psychologist.
