Who is eligible to be seen at Counseling and Psychological Services?
All University of Nebraska-Lincoln students enrolled in at least one credit hour are eligible to be seen at Counseling and Psychological Services.
I attend another University of Nebraska campus. Can I be seen at Counseling and Psychological Services?
If your courses are located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, you are eligible; these include the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing and College of Dentistry.
How can I make an appointment?
In order to best serve students who often have competing demands in their schedules, CAPS provides same-day appointments for students who are NEW to our services. To schedule one of these initial evaluation appointments, we are happy to offer convenient, online scheduling. If you have been seen at CAPS before or prefer to speak with an office associate to schedule your appointment, please call CAPS at (402) 472-7450. Let the front desk know if you are in crisis and need immediate support.
How many sessions will I need to attend?
This varies by person, but most students resolve their concerns in four to six sessions. Sessions last approximately 50 minutes.
How long is the wait?
Same day appointments are available for first appointments and crisis services. Demand for Counseling and Psychological Services varies throughout the academic year, so it is possible you may experience a short wait to be seen. We realize it can be difficult to seek counseling services, and having to wait can be frustrating. Please know we will make every effort to serve as many students as possible with a minimal wait. When there is a wait for services, we can provide you with other counseling resources in the community. We are always available for crisis appointments. Let the staff know if you are in crisis and need to be seen immediately.

Do you have walk-in hours?
We only accept walk-ins for crisis situations. If you feel you are in a crisis, let the staff member assisting you know. CAPS offers 24/7 crisis services with our on-call counselor. Call CAPS at 402-472-7450 and press "4" to speak to a counselor on duty at any time.
How much do your services cost?
Counseling services are covered by your student fees. Assessments as well as alcohol and other drug services may incur a charge.
What is your privacy policy?
The therapeutic relationship and what is discussed by a therapist and client are considered private and protected under the law. Read more.
Where can I park?
Refer to the image to view the Patient Parking Area (shown in green) adjacent to the University Health Center.
If you park in this area, you must sign in your vehicle upon entering the building.
- Know your vehicle’s license plate number. Write it down or take a photo.
- Enter the building and look for the podium near the elevator.
- Register your vehicle info on the Log In Sheet.
- Then you can proceed to the CAPS office on the 2nd Floor.

Can I change my counselor?
It’s important to us that you feel comfortable with your counselor. If you feel you don’t have that connection, call us at 402-472-7450 and ask a staff member to assign you to a new counselor. Please note this may take a few business days to accommodate.
How do I participate in groups?
We offer a variety of free support and therapy groups each semester. View the current list. Most groups do not require that you are currently receiving individual therapy for you to participate. If you are interested in a group, speak with your current counselor. If you are interested in a group and do not currently receive individual therapy at Counseling and Psychological Services, call us at 402-472-7450.
Can Counseling and Psychological Services help me if I am required to get alcohol counseling?
We provide assessments for students referred for alcohol or other drug counseling by Student Conduct & Community Standards, but we do not conduct court-ordered assessments. Learn more about alcohol and other drug services.
How can I obtain proof of my situation in order to withdraw from a class or seek accommodations?
We cannot provide documentation unless you have used Counseling and Psychological Services prior to your request. Speak to your counselor for more information about this documentation. If you are experiencing concerns that are affecting your academics or other areas of your life, we are here to help. Do you see couples or families at Counseling and Psychological Services?
We provide couple and partner counseling. Partners are required to be currently registered students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
I’ve been seeing a counselor back home or in the community and want to transfer to Counseling and Psychological Services. How can I make an appointment?
Call Counseling and Psychological Services at 402-472-7450 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to schedule an appointment or schedule an initial evaluation online. It can be helpful, though not required, for providers to have access to your previous treatment records. To transfer your records, contact your current provider and sign a release to have your records faxed to Counseling and Psychological Services at 402.472.6977 or download the Counseling and Psychological Services Release and Exchance of Information Authorization Form and submit it to us.
