The staff members of CAPS grieve with the Asian/Asian American community. We are deeply saddened by the loss of the eight innocent lives in the Atlanta community due to senseless violence.

This most recent tragedy illuminates the escalating rates of Anti-Asian American violence permeating our society from California to New York that heightens awareness of the despair that exists in our marginalized populations. We must continue to challenge the divisive rhetoric that encourages racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, discrimination, and microaggressions whenever and wherever we find them. We recognize that all these lives matter. We must demand change that brings about equity and equality for all members of our society.

During this time of tragedy, it is normal to experience a range of feelings and emotions after a tragedy. Feelings such as shock, sadness, anger, fears, helplessness, and guilt are normal.

Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) joins the University of Nebraska community in expressing our grief and sadness to all those who have been impacted by the recent tragedies in Atlanta, Louisville and Minneapolis. We know that the Husker community is hurting. These tragedies have been especially injurious to members of our Black and African-American community. It is normal to experience a range of feelings and emotions after a tragedy. Feelings such as shock, sadness, anger, fears, helplessness, and guilt are normal.

CAPS is committed to providing compassionate care for all of our students who have been impacted and need support. We encourage you to contact our office if you (or someone you know) would like support. We also encourage you to be a role model as a Husker. Reach out to your friends and colleagues of color and provide them support and compassion. Let them know we all SEE them and UNITE with them.
