Speak with a counselor about an immediate crisis, get support and develop a plan to help you manage your crisis.
 

You decide how you define “crisis.” Examples might include:

  • Suicidal thoughts, intent, plan, and/or other risks of harm to yourself.
  • Homicidal thoughts, intent, plan, and/or other risks of harm to others.
  • Having withdrawal symptoms from drugs or alcohol (call 911 for medical assistance).
  • A traumatic event occurred recently (e.g., a crime, natural disaster, sexual or physical assault).
  • Someone close to you has recently died.
  • Perceptual disturbances such as hearing things or seeing things that others do not hear or see.
  • Feeling persistently unsafe, a sense of impending doom or danger, or that something or someone wants to hurt you or is out to get you.
  • Currently living without food, clothing, and/or shelter.
  • Unable to care for yourself, such as not eating or sleeping for several days.
  • Experiencing uncontrollable panic and unable to calm down.

When should I intervene for a student who I believe is in crisis?

Intervene when you think the student is out of control, violent and/or is in a life-threatening situation.

  • Example: A student is threatening suicide or homicide; a student physically harms themselves and/or others.
How should I intervene for a student in crisis?

Call 911 or the campus police at (402) 472-2222. Report your concern, the student’s name, and where the student can be found.

How can Counseling and Psychological Services help in the event of a campuswide crisis?

If a difficult situation occurs that involves more than one student or system, we offer a variety of services. Faculty and staff may consult with a staff member about difficult situations involving students about whom they are concerned. Call (402) 472-7450 Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for a consultation. If it is an emergency, call 911 or the campus police at (402) 472-2222.

I am a parent. What do I do if my student is in crisis?

Parents are welcome to consult with us about their student if they have concerns. We are required by law to keep counseling and relationships with clients 19 and older confidential, but we can advise how to approach various concerns with your student and help you connect him or her to resources.
