Counseling and Psychological Services offers a variety of services to assist students with their personal concerns, including individual counseling, group and relationship counseling, support and therapy groups, workshops and more. Learn more.

Any current University of Nebraska-Lincoln student is eligible. Students who pay the University Program and Facilities Fee can receive certain Counseling and Psychological Services visits for no extra charge.

We are in Suite 223 on the second level of the University Health Center at 550 N. 19th St.

You may help assist your student in making an appointment, but they must be with you to make the appointment. The student must either call Counseling and Psychological Services at 402.472.7450 or come to Counseling and Psychological Services, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to schedule an appointment. If your student is in crisis during business hours, walk-in appointments are available. If your student is in crisis after business hours, students can call 402.472.7450 and follow the prompts to be connected with an on-call therapist.

Making the decision to pursue counseling is a personal choice, but it can be helpful if you encourage your student to talk to a Counseling and Psychological Services staff member about their concerns. The following strategies may be helpful:

• Encourage them to take a free, quick online mental health assessment
• Tell your student that the information they share at counseling is confidential and will not be disclosed without their permission
• Inform them they can meet with a counselor for one session without committing to ongoing sessions
• Reduce the stigma associated with mental health by reminding them that Counseling and Psychological Services is regularly used by students for a variety of concerns. Just as you would meet with a doctor when you have a medical concern, there is no shame in meeting with a counselor to discuss a personal concern
• Encourage your student to visit our website to learn more about our services.

No. Our records are confidential and separate from your student’s academic record.

Our records are confidential. We follow applicable state and federal privacy laws. We typically need your student’s written permission before we can release any information to you.

If your student wishes to receive counseling or medication management services at the University Health Center, they should call 402.472.5000 to set up an initial counseling or medication management appointment shortly after arriving on campus. It can be helpful, though not required, to transfer records of previous care to the Health Center in advance of your student’s first appointment. When calling to schedule this appointment, your student will be informed whether this paperwork is advised. At that time, we will inform the student how to transfer their records. In their initial appointment, we will assess prior treatment received from providers at home so that we can determine the best treatment plan moving forward. We typically offer bi-weekly therapy appointments.

Counseling and Psychological Services now offers therapy sessions at no cost in a comprehensive short term counseling model to students who pay the University Program and Facilities Fee, commonly known as student fees. They can also attend any one of our free support groups for students. Some restrictions apply and certain services may incur a charge.

Another option for students is well-being coaching offered through Big Red Resilience and Well-being. Coaching is a service offered by trained graduate and upper-level undergraduate students to enhance holistic well-being, health, and success through empowering conversations about strengths and goals.
